The Fine Arts in Virginia

The “fine arts” encompasses all of the principle disciplines of creative arts: dance, music, voice, painting, sculpture, and theatre. The nearest cities to Lynchburg that offer fine arts opportunities are Roanoke, Charlottesville, and Richmond, each being 65-120 miles away.

Roanoke
Roanoke has its successful Center in the Square arts facility, encompassing more than a city block of museum, symphony, dance, and theatre facilities. Provided with free use of the new facilities, each arts group has the opportunity for growth and success Ð a winning combination for both the artists and citizens of Roanoke.

Richmond
Richmond’s downtown arts scene is currently undergoing a major development with the creation of its $93 million Virginia Performing Arts Center. When completed in 2007, plans are for the renovation of three other theatres at the cost of $76 million. These major complexes have spurred greater interest in the arts, offering more performing arts opportunities to a greater number of people.

Charlottesville
Charlottesville will open its restored Paramount Theatre in the fall of 2004. This performance center is located in an historic section of the city, near the University of Virginia and Thomas Jefferson’s incomparable Monticello, both very popular tourist attractions.

Lynchburg
Lynchburg’s Academy of Fine Arts is itself preparing to join this impressive assemblage of Virginia arts organizations and centers of learning in a fashion that is even more challenging and impressive. It is prepared to undertake the task of offering performances, exhibitions, and training in all of the fine arts disciplines - under one roof!

Following the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center sale of its own 42-year-old building and the Academy of Music’s downtown location, the two merged organizations have strategized to create a new “Center for the Arts” in the downtown historic district. Our vision and plan has drawn significant attention from the City of Lynchburg, the Federal Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
