Albert Handell co-teaches his workshops with his wife - artist/teacher/co-author, Anita Louise West, and students of all levels are welcome.

THE WORKSHOP BEGINS Monday at 9:30am with a presentation by Albert and Anita. They will explain the schedule for the coming week and review the basics of outdoor painting including materials, portability, and outdoor lighting conditions. DAILY WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

WORKSHOPS ARE FOR 5 DAYS - BEGINNING MONDAY MORNING AT 9:30am THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON

During spring, summer and autumn months, early morning and late afternoon light are considered the best light for painting. The schedule below gives you ample opportunity to paint both.

Demonstrations will be in Pastel and oils.

Every morning during the workshop, Mr. Handell will give a demonstration. Every afternoon, he and Anita will give individual help to each artist while painting at one of several special locations.

FRIDAY

  • 9:30am - 3pm: In the studio - Tree demonstration, followed by the continuation from Thursday evening of individual, in-depth farewell critiques. Bring a bag lunch with you today.

For the individual in-depth critiques on Thursday evening and Friday, it is suggested that you bring to the workshop original works, or slides or photos of work you have done previously.

If there is inclement weather (rain, winds), we will paint in the studio from photos. It's a good idea to bring your favorite photos to paint from. Demonstrations will be both in pastels and oils; there is a strong overlap between the two mediums, however, members of the workshop need not feel they must paint in both. Focusing in on one paint medium is usually best.

Suggested Art Supplies For
On-Location Landscape Painting

Will there be Art Supplies that I can purchase at the Workshop? There will be no art supplies available at the workshop.

For Plein Air painting: Some general supplies are your portable easel, a hat with a wide brim, sunscreen, etc. Unfortunately umbrellas, which could be useful, are difficult to take onto airplanes.

What Art Supplies should the Pastel Artist Bring? If you are painting in pastel, bring all the pastels that you have and the pastel papers that you like to paint on - plus a few light weight drawing boards i.e., made of foam core or gator board or any light weight material. Albert likes to use The Kitty Wallis Sanded Paper in both white and their Belgium Mist grey tone, and he prefers the 12x18" pad of eight sheets, but if you wish to work on a smaller size, these pads are also available in 9x12" sheets. These are very handy pads for pasteling on location, and can be purchased from Dakota Art Supplies (they only sell pastel supplies) at 888.345.0067.

What Art Supplies Should the Oil Painter Bring? If you are painting in Oils, bring the colors that you are accustomed to painting with, plus at least 12 or more canvas or canvas panels to paint on. Anita likes to paint on the Source Tek Panels, telephone them at 800.587.5462 or visit their website: www.canvaspanels.com. They have Claussen Linen glued to light weight Birch plywood - in different sizes. They are strong and lightweight the recommended sizes are 9x12", 11x14", 12x16", or 14x18". Choose the sizes that you are most comfortable painting on.

A Suggested List of Oil Colors: Mr. Handell paints in oil during the winter months in the studio. He uses Turpenoid as his paint medium, especially at the beginning, since these works are larger and call for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th painting sessions. He will then use Winsor Newton Liquin, very sparingly as his paint medium. He applies paint combing both brush and knife applications of color. His Oil Palette is listed below:

Titanium WhiteW/N (Winsor Newton) Naples YellowW/N
Cadmium LemonW/N Cadmium YellowW/N
Cadmium OrangeW/N Cadmium Red LightW/N
Permanent Auzarin CrimsonW/N Yellow Ocher LightW/N
Burnt SiennaW/N Thio VioletGrumbacher
Viridian (Green)W/N Cobalt BlueW/N
Ultra-Marine BlueW/N Ivory BlackW/N

Can I Ship My Art Supplies to the Workshop? Yes, you can ship your art supplies to the hotel you are staying in. Please contact them directly for this need.

In the case of inclement weather,
please check WSET's cancellations.
