Academy of Fine Arts receives $200,000 grant from The Timken Foundation of Canton

LYNCHBURG - (April 5, 2013) The Academy of Fine Arts announced today receipt of a $200,000 grant from The Timken Foundation of Canton, Ohio.  The grant will be used for the Academy's campaign to restore the historic 1905 Academy of Music Theatre.

"The Timken Foundation of Canton believes this is not just simply a restoration project but an initiative that is addressing the tangible benefits of regional revitalization, tourism growth, generation of new jobs and tax revenues," said Curtis Crews, Community Relations Liaison with Timken's Altavista Bearing Plant. "We believe this project will lead to the opening of minds and hearts of many, particularly our youth to the arts, attraction of relocating businesses and retention of a qualified work force, all in all resulting in the elements of positive economic impact."

The new state-of-the-art Academy of Fine Arts will be the anchor to Lynchburg's revitalized historic downtown and a catalyst for continuing economic prosperity.

"I knew right away when I met Timken representatives last fall that they appreciated the importance of a theatre restoration project on the economic development of a community," said David Jenkins, Executive Director of the Academy of Fine Arts. "The Foundation had an intimate knowledge and an undeniable understanding of the value of this historic theatre to our region."

This gift is the first public corporate gift towards the Academy's theatre restoration since the formal launch announcement in March 2013. The fundraising goal is $16.6 million, which includes the plan to construct a two-story connector between the theatre and the administration building next door that will expand lobby, gallery, concession and meeting spaces.

"With this gift, we're getting closer to the $1 million mark and making steady progress. We couldn't be more grateful for The Timken Foundation's support," said Beth Doyle, Director of Development of the Academy of Fine Arts.

The Timken Foundation of Canton is a private, charitable, family foundation established in 1934 and has disbursed more than $300 million in grants.

The Academy of Fine Arts, anchored by the historic Academy of Music Theatre, inspires, engages and educates the diverse population of Central Virginia in the performing and visual arts.
