Welcome!

The Academy of Fine Arts offers an array of arts programming for the community and by the community! See how you can get involved in the following areas:

Art Classes
Take an art class! Arts classes and workshops are available for all ages, from newborns to senior citizens. Enjoy a weekend class all about photography or watercolors, take a 4-session class on clay, or enroll in a semester course with your kiddos!

Juried Gallery exhibits
Twice annually the Academy galleries feature you! Submit your piece of art into the April Juried Art exhibition, or submit your photograph into the September Juried Photography exhibition, both featuring an opening reception and awards!

Summer Theatre
Each summer, the Academy presents three musicals featuring our local talented children and teens! Ages 5-18 are invited to enroll in a summer theatre course, ranging from one week to four weeks, and star in a musical camp that culminates in public performances! 2013 summer theatre camp performances featured several sold out audiences.

Volunteer
Our volunteers are an exceptionally helpful, friendly, professional, and creative part of our team. Share your interests or talents, or learn a new skill all while having fun and making friends. With your assistance, we can continue to offer classes, outreach programs, performances, exhibits and special events that make the Academy an exciting place to visit.

1905 Historic Theatre Campaign

The Academy of Fine Arts is in the midst of a $16.6 million capital campaign to complete the restoration of the historic Academy of Music Theatre, the final element in creating a three-building complex for the arts. When complete, the Academy of Fine Arts will include the restored 1905 Academy of Music Theatre, the Warehouse studio theatre, expanded art galleries, conference/meeting space, and an arts education center for instruction in a variety of disciplines, including art, pottery, music, photography and drama.

As one of the few surviving Beaux-Arts style theatres in Virginia, the Academy of Music Theatre is an important cultural landmark for the City of Lynchburg and the Commonwealth. Restoration of the historic theatre and completion of this project is almost universally regarded as the final key to the revitalization of downtown Lynchburg, serving as a magnet for continued economic development and enhancing the quality of life for Central Virginians.

The full integration of Academy of Fine Arts properties will result in a restored 108 year-old theatre serving as a concert hall, conference center and host to numerous local arts organizations and touring theatre companies. Boasting exceptional acoustics and sight lines, and complete with modern amenities, the theatre will bring to the area some of the most prominent names in Jazz, Classical Music, Blues, Comedy, Country, Rock, Bluegrass, R&B, Dance and everything in between.
